Short answer: no. The minimum employment period only decides whether someone can bring an unfair dismissal claim. Plenty of other protections apply from the first day.
What the minimum employment period does
An employee has to work for you for at least 6 months before they can apply for unfair dismissal. If you are a small business employer with fewer than 15 employees, it is 12 months. Regular and systematic casuals count in your headcount, so check the number before you assume you are small.
Inside that window, an employee cannot claim the dismissal was harsh, unjust or unreasonable. That is real protection for you. It is not a blank cheque.
What applies from day one
You cannot dismiss someone because of a protected attribute such as sex, age, race, disability, pregnancy or family responsibilities. You cannot dismiss someone because they asked about their pay, took sick leave, made a complaint or exercised a workplace right. Those are general protections claims, and they have no minimum service requirement and no cap on compensation.
What this means in practice
If the fit is not right in the first few months, you can end it, and for most reasons you will be fine. Do it properly anyway. Tell the person the reason, give the correct notice, pay out what is owed, and write down what happened. If the reason is anywhere near one of the protected ones, stop and get advice before you act, not after.
Small business? Use the Code
If you have fewer than 15 employees, following the Small Business Fair Dismissal Code gives you a defence to unfair dismissal claims after the 12 months. It is a short document and worth reading before you need it.

Quick answer
Can I dismiss an employee for any reason in their first 6 months?
No. The 6-month minimum employment period (12 months for a small business with fewer than 15 staff) only stops an unfair dismissal claim. Dismissing someone for a protected reason, like sick leave, pregnancy or asking about pay, is unlawful from day one.
