An HR consultant helps small businesses manage their people properly. That means getting the legal foundations right, dealing with performance and conduct issues when they come up, and making sure the business is not sitting on unnecessary risk. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Most small business owners do not think about HR until something goes wrong. A staff member stops performing. Someone makes a complaint. A long-serving employee resigns and suddenly you realise their contract has not been updated since they started five years ago.
By that point, you are already behind. And often, the problem is harder to fix than it would have been to prevent.
An HR consultant’s job is to help you get ahead of that. Not by drowning you in policy documents, but by making sure the people side of your business is set up properly so you can get on with running it.
The practical stuff an HR consultant handles
The day-to-day work of an HR consultant for a small business tends to fall into a few areas.
Employment contracts and documentation. Most small business contracts we see have gaps. Missing clauses, outdated terms, or language copied from a template that does not match the actual role or award. A good HR consultant reviews what you have, fixes what is wrong, and drafts new contracts when you hire.
Compliance with Fair Work obligations. Australia’s employment laws are detailed and they change regularly. The Fair Work Act 2009, modern awards, the National Employment Standards, payroll obligations — keeping on top of all of it is a full-time job on its own. An HR consultant does that for you. Performance and conduct. This is where most small business owners feel most out of their depth. What do you do when someone is not performing? What process do you follow for a serious misconduct issue? What are the rules around termination? An HR consultant guides you through it step by step, making sure you handle it properly and protect the business.
Policies and procedures. Leave, flexible work, social media, workplace behaviour. Small businesses need policies too, but they do not need 40-page documents nobody reads. An HR consultant writes practical policies in plain English that your team will actually understand and follow.
Hiring support. Position descriptions, interview frameworks, offer letters. Getting hiring right from the start saves you significant pain down the track.
When should a small business hire an HR consultant?
There is no fixed rule, but these are the situations we see most often:
- You are hiring for the first time or building a team quickly
- You have a performance or conduct issue you are not sure how to handle
- You have been operating for a few years and have never had your contracts or policies reviewed
- You want someone to call when a people problem comes up, rather than trying to figure it out yourself
- You are growing fast and need HR foundations in place before things get complicated
“The question we ask every new client is simple: who handles the people side of your business right now? If the answer is you, or no one, that is where we start.”
Is an HR consultant the same as an employment lawyer?
No. An employment lawyer handles legal disputes and litigation. An HR consultant gives you practical, operational advice you can act on today. Most small businesses need an HR consultant long before they need a lawyer. In fact, good HR advice usually means you never need to call a lawyer at all.
What does it cost?
It depends on how you engage. At Jigsaw HR, we work with clients on a retainer model starting from $1,500 per month, or on a project basis for specific pieces of work. Some things, like a contract review or a single performance conversation, can be handled as a one-off. Others, like ongoing compliance support or a complex ER matter, are better managed as a retained relationship.
The more relevant question is what it costs not to have it. A single unfair dismissal claim can cost tens of thousands of dollars and months of management time. Getting your foundations right is almost always cheaper.
How do I know if I need one?
